All work is done by hand in our workshop
We offer a variety of single-bore models.
Details of available keys and other variables are found inside the store in the drop-down menus.
The default tuning is to the minor pentatonic scale. Around 70% of Native-American style flutes are tuned this way. This scale is a great fit for the physical characteristics of this style of flute, and is forgiving for the beginner - almost any combination of notes sounds good.
The default temperament is 12 tone equal temperament. (This is normal temperament).
The 432hz tuning: Tuning to a microtone below concert pitch is popular in the community. Many consider this to be the ‘true’ tuning, in harmony with the resonance of the planet. It is suited for solo, meditative players - or could be played in a group of instruments also tuned to this frequency. If you’re in the 432 band, please also have a look at ‘just intonation’— click the link below.
Offset fingering hole placement is available for most flutes, the exceptions being those in the highest register, the Tideline model in the mid-range, and all in the Arrowhead design. Many players prefer to have the holes a little skewed to facilitate ease of fingering. The longer the flute, the more this comes into play. More about offset fingering here: technicals
Our totems (blocks) are attached either by the regular tie-on method which is listed as ‘thong’ in the store, or our innovative ‘touch-totem’.
All our flutes are finished with two coats of a sealing food-grade oil. This particular oil penetrates the wood minimally leaving a smooth, waterproof surface. This method allows the internal wood structure to remain intact and keeps the overall weight lower than would be the case when using a penetrating oil. This is followed by a polish with natural carnauba wax to leave a vivid gloss finish.
In the lowest register, the lowest key available is D. Its fundamental tone is the first D above middle C on the piano ( 293 Hz ).
In the highest register, the highest key available is G. Its fundamental tone is the second G above middle C on the piano (784 Hz).
